Just need a little direction. Ill start by giving a little bit of background about my riding history. Ive always had 4 strokes, and loved them (still do truthfully). The type of riding we always did was wider, more open trails, so my 250 F was great and i never really had any concern for bike set up and such. Well now the type of riding that i do is more single track stuff, tighter and ALOT more technical stuff, so i went from a YZ450f to a 2008 KTM 250 xc. Let me just start by saying i love the bike and i think my concern now is bike set up, but i wanna start with the basics. Ive been on several rides with my ktm and i really do love how light and nimble it is. But it just doesnt tractor like the four strokes i ride with and even the 300 xc. Its supposed to isnt it? I put a new piston and rings in it about 10 hrs or less ago (vertex standard piston) and that helped with compression, and really this bike doesnt lack power per say, i just wish it would lug better, like if i get stuck on a hill i pretty much always have to go back down and try again. I do need a rear tire, and i think my jetting needs adressed, but im just curious if theres somthing else motor wise i can do to get this thing to chug a little better, ive traded and sold bikes around alot this past season to get to this one, and ive done alot of cosmetic work to it, and i really like the bike, so im not really in favor of selling this one to get somthing else i may have to do work to. I have a link attached of me riding it a little, can anyone tell me if they think it sounds funny? ive heard other ktm 250s and they sound a little deeper, a little slower tick. idk, im kinda searchin for what direction to go, should i take it to someone who can tune it up just right or try to tinker with it myself till i narrow down the possibilities. Anyway thanks for any help i can get. https://youtu.be/GoiSOI7S820

I use m5b tire w/ ultra thick tube and 2 rim locks. Set pressure on uphill switchback stuff around 6/8 psi. Have you played w/ the power valve spring? You can put green spring in , or turn the valve in a few turns . Stock it should have yellow spring in it. Yes get the jetting dialed in for sure. Lots of things you can do to this bike to make it work for your kind of riding.

Yeh i have the green spring in and the adjustment is almost all the way out, which i have put the yellow in twice now and both times it did much worse with the yellow, so i guess im gonna leave the green in. And im gonna get the carb tuned in and a new tire and hope that helps...Thanks for the reply

I have a 2006 KTM 250SX with a 11oz flywheel weight and a stock 2014 KTM 300XC. I ride tight single track in the coast range of Oregon. There is no question the 300 lugs better than the 250. However, I find I just need to start slipping the clutch a little sooner in the 250. I have not found the 250 can't do tings the 300 can it is just a little easier to ride. My 250 is tuned slightly rich. I have heard that running on the rich side will help with lugging. I have always run the 250 a little rich so I'm only assuming this is true. Based on your comment on the sound of your bike this might be a good place to start.
I also have a Rekluse that I pull in and out of the 250 depending on my mood. The Rekluse helps a LOT in tough climbs but it is also a pain at times when you stop on a steep trail and have no engine breaking to hold the bike.
I would start with jetting and then add some flywheel weight. I don't think the power valve has much to do with lugging. I find it effects midrange wheel spin more than anything. I put the red one in to put a smile on my face and the green one when I want to get serious.

Turn the valve in for torque ,out for power. Try yellow turned all the way in on map 2 . It'll have grunt for sure. I also run a 12 /50/53 sprockets.

I got another question...does anyone know if a sx flywheel weight will work on my xc? I think the motors are identical but im not 100% sure...everyone only shows a 5oz weight for the xc but 11 oz weights for the sx...im thinkin heavier is better?

It depends how you want it to respond. The heavier the slower the snap. I like to try things one at a time so I can know exactly the change.
