Derbi Dh 2.0

  1. Not really a thumper per se, but quite interesting anyway.[IMG] [IMG]

My take - looks quite sweet. First thing I'd do to that bike, though, would be a set of Doublewide rims, an old Marzocchi Shiver for the front, and a couple other minor changes. I'd love to give it a try, though.

A couple things I don't like - the press release says that the fork is inverted when it's obviously a standard Marzo 888 on the photos. It's got an air shock out back, when I think it would be cheaper and more durable with a standard coilover (Fox DHX 3? Actually, a Curnutt long-stroke would be awesome). The frame looks a little chintzy to me, the swingarm in particular, I think it could be a little beefier. The single speed tranny turns me off a little bit, I would have preferred a fully manual like on a standard dirt bike, even if it would raise the weight by 10 pounds or so. How about a two-stroke powerplant?

  2. Very cool!!!!!
    And it thumps:d
  3. That looks like WAY too much fun!
  4. It'd be tons of fun but way fragile. I break high end DH bikes just with my own weight and gravity/leg generated speed. I think really bad things would happen with another 40lbs and the speed that would come along with a motor. It'd be a total hoot till then though. A supermoto version would be an awesome city-bike :lol3 You could give it a gearbox, sturder wheels, forks, two stroke engine etc and end up with an awesome bike (and it'd happen to be called a KX100 :lol).

Note, I do ride a bicycle harder than most. Haven't competed a lot, but have run a few DH and DS races in the noob class ('cause I was a 'noob, but my times were good for 2nd overall in the last race iirc).

  5. Totally agree with you on most of the points. Carbon-fiber rear swingarm? No thanks.

A pair of guys built an 85-powered bike like this, but it was even less bicycle-influenced, it was technically just a custom built 85 MX bike, but it was very well made. http://thekneeslider.com/archives/2007/12/04/project-m85-freeride-motorcycle-mountain-bike/

As for this - I think even a 50cc 3-speed powered one would be better.

  6. Or an ultra-light 50cc two stroke from a cobra or LEM would be pretty cool too. Ultimately its pretty hard to beat a KX100 if you want a small, light powered bike. 150lbs, ~25hp, absolutely indestructible (believe me, I've tried!), good suspension that is only a spring-swap away from working great for an adult and cheaper than even a low end DH bike. They really are huge fun. We've got one "for the wife." :deal

The advantage of the bicycle-based DH bike is you might get by riding in places where a dirt bike wouldn't be allowed. I have a friend who has a 6kw electric motor on his commuter mtb and it'll run 50mph. If that system were adopted to work on a DH bike and geared down it'd be awesome for those places without chair lifts :)

  7. Its been months, but two things about this bike:

    Its a three speed automatic.

Does anyone know who makes the engine?

  8. The Derbi site disagrees.Nacional Motor SA from Spain.
  9. couple of problems. Can't be regestered as no DOT tires, brakes, lights etc. Much better dirtbikes (even lightweight ones) than that. If it had pedals and was under 49cc's it becomes a "Motorized Bicyle" and in most states can be ridden on the street with no plate and just min head and tail light.
Motoped is redesigning the frame on theirs to take different engines and you can build it up any way you like as it is just a frame kit. I will be getting one when they are done.
